Solar Powered Floating Home Generates A Full Year’s Power in 6 Months

The Floatwing is an off-grid floating habitat that utilizes solar panels to achieve energy independence for 6 months out of the year.  With the right batteries installed (think Tesla’s Powerwall), it can harvest and store enough electricity for the entire year.

Designed by the Portuguese design firm Friday, the modular boat comes in multiple sizes with an array of sustainability tools to install.

The boat is 6 meters in width, but can be anywhere from 10-18 meters in length, depending on if it has 0, 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms.  The entire piece can be shipped nearly anywhere in the world and fits into two shipping containers.

It also comes fully equipped with a kitchen, heat pump, AC generator, barbecue on the upper terrace and a wine cellar.  The windows can be opened in the summer and an indoor pellet stove keeps the house warm during the winter if no battery storage is used for heat.
